"Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble. Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time; casting all your care upon Him, for He careth for you." 1 St. Peter 5:5-7.

St. Peter first addresses his clergy in this chapter, and the admonishments he gives are very applicable to those entrusted with the cure of souls - and indeed all Christians. The specific reference to the hierarchy bears closer examination, for in it we see both a warning and a promise.

"Blessed is he that shall eat bread in the kingdom of God" St. Luke 14:15

The excuses so many Christians offer for missing Mass, or Holy Communion, can be likened to those to whom Jesus refers in this parable. He has spread His Table, and issued the summons, how is it that the invited can so easily shrug it off and carry on about their own affairs? Jesus has promised to meet us, He has promised to give us Himself, to be with us always, but especially in the Holy Eucharist as Heaven touches earth and we approach on bended knee with bowed head as it were very Calvary. We come to Him, we the "poor, and the maimed, and the halt, and the blind", as to the Tree of Life itself for healing, for nourishment, for consolation, and grace. There is no other Tree, no other Fount. "To whom shall we go?".

"And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame." St. Luke 16:23,24.

The reality of a literal Hell, or the place of the souls of the wicked departed, is an unpopular sermon theme these days. Some console themselves with the notion that the descriptions in the Bible are mere metaphors and symbolism. There couldn't possibly be a real lake of fire and brimstone...The intermediate suffering of lost souls as they await the resurrection is just superstition... the very concept of demons in beastly animal or semi-human form is mediaeval primitivism... The salvation we refer to in our liberal sermons is more of a "recipe for success" in life - harnessing the power within, living the good life, being an "effective" person "saved" from failure to realise our full potential, etc - than a rescue from everlasting damnation separated from God in darkness, misery and painful despair.

"After this I looked, and behold, a door was opened in heaven: and the first voice I heard was as it were of a trumpet talking with me; which said, Come up hither, and I will shew thee things which must be hereafter." Rev 4:1

"I am worried by the Blessed Virgin's messages to little Lucia of Fatima. This persistence of Mary about the dangers which menace the Church is a divine warning against the suicide of altering the Faith in her liturgy, her theology, and her soul. I hear, all around me, innovators who wish to dismantle the sacred chapel, destroy the universal flame of the Church, reject her ornaments, and make her feel remorse for her historical past. A day will come when the civilised world will deny its God. When the Church will doubt as Peter doubted. She will be tempted to believe that man has become God. In our churches Christians will search in vain for the red lamp where God awaits them, like Mary Magdalene, weeping before the empty tomb, they will ask "Where have they taken Him?"-*the future Pope Pius XII in 1931

"And the Holy Ghost shall come upon you..."

Veni sancte Spiritus, et emitte caelitus, lucis tuae radium...

The hymnody surrounding Pentecost and the Holy Spirit is overflowing with references to light, celestial fire, unction, His seven-fold gifts, the life giver and inspirer of every good thing, etc. But most of all it is Fire and Light. The illuminating and purifying graces that the Holy Spirit is able to pour out on a life submitted to God are powerful.
